St. Mary’s & St. Gerard’s NS receives the National Flag

On Thursday 19th November, to commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising and to celebrate 100 years since the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, members of the Defence Forces delivered the National Flag to our school.  The team, led by Lieutenant Peter Dunne and including Lieutenant Evelyn Fahy, Sergeant Heneghan and Private Radford, formally presented the National Flag to the school in a special ceremony in the school hall.  First, the team taught us how to care for the National Flag and explained the protocol that surrounds this vibrant symbol of our nation.  Retired Brigadier General Jim Farrell (Sinéad O’Mara’s grandfather) accepted the National Flag on our behalf.  Lieutenant Evelyn Fahy, Eva Murray and Evan Donnelly (from 6th Class) read out the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. All members of the Defence Forces then answered any questions we had. Next, Lieutenant Peter Dunne invited us to write our own School Proclamation which we should read out along with the Proclamation of the Irish Republic on Proclamation Day (15th March 2016).  We will also raise the National Flag on this day.  Finally, we all stood to sing the National Anthem.
